CPU question

Forever and a day I have played on differing versions of the AMD Athlon 64 X2 chipsets, (4400, 5400, 6400) and much to my dismay they could never maintain stable fps in ET. I am thinking about replacing my 6400 and was wondering if any of you have used this CPU: Phenom X4 9850 HD9850XAJ4BGH), 2.5GHz, 125W, rev.B3, SocketAM2+, Quad-Core.

And if so how does it perform?

I scored it for Brink and it got 6/10 stars so I suppose it will suffice for that game as well. I'm looking at a cheap upgrade atm so that's why I'm not listing a high dollar cpu. I'll probably be getting a dif computer within 6 to 8 months if all goes well with my new job.

I have an X6 1090T which goes for a bit under 200 these days. Its been giving rock solid frames in ET. Best comparison I can make

If you have a socket am2+ you could run a Phenom II X4 955 quad core.(what I'm running by the way) There $140 right now, you could go higher, but it might not be worth the extra money. As for the 6 core AMD's, I'm holding out for the next generation for now as for most things the four cores are faster. The reason being you only get 6 cores for mutitasking, for things like gaming they shut down 3 cores and overclock the remaining 3 leaving you with a fast 3 core. It's more about the video card anyway. I have a friend running a $360 newegg special with a Athlon II X2 255 Dual-Core and all we added was a ATI 4890 board and bigger PS He's able to run left 4 dead 2 and all his other games with everything cranked up and no FPS issues.

I have an am2 motherboard not an am2+ but the motherboard specs say it can hold am2+ cpu's, if I'm reading them correctly. At $140, that's almost double the price as the one I have listed. They did have a $100/$110 phenom II X40 920 or something like that.

Only other thing I can really add to this is that I would consider a "Black Edition" processor. They have unlocked multipliers and are super OC friendly. I can push my to x6 to 4Ghz without issue using a CM 212+ for cooling.

Looks like the 920 chip might be the best option for you, but I used to run ET and left for dead 1 ad 2 with a single core athlon 64 3200 without any issues.

Yea, the single cores were fine. Just the doubles, which is all I had, were not good for stable fps.

So the phenom's are not just a doubled up version of the double core's then I take it? Cause if they were, they'd probably have the same issues.

I know it's probably not in your buget, but if you could swing it Newegg has a combo deal this morning that would basically give you a new computer for $234.94

That's why I spent $1400 building my current box a year and a half ago. I should be good for 5- 8 years with minor tweaks. I got 6 years out of my last one and could have gotten 2-3 more if MSI had updated the CPU chart sooner for my board that showed mine could take a dual core. That and ATI came out with their 4670 AGP board after I built. Or I would have just updated and keep it going. The building isn't the bad part, it's all the transfering and reconfiguring and this time a new operating system.
