Buffalo Bad Asses

I'm playing ET on my laptop which has a widescreen display running at a res of 1366x768. the problem is, whenever i play ET I have two giant black bars on the sides of the screen. I've tried changing the r_customheight to 1336 and width to 768 and doing a vid_restart, but then it automatically sets it back to 1028x768. Anyone know if its possible to get rid of those blasted bars or am i just stuck with the tiny screen :/
