Quake wars on Windows 7

Post by TheDecipher » Sun Jun 20, 2010 10:14 pm

Hi,

I used to play quake wars on my laptop just fine on Windows Vista. It wasn't laggy or anything and it was high quality gfx... Now I installed windows 7 on it with DirectX 11 and its laggy, my lag spikes from around 100 (on vista it used to be a steady 90) to around 300 constantly no break. I don't use wifi for gaming, i have the wire directly connected to the laptop and have connected the laptop to my monitor but its laggy. I think it may be due to Windows 7, any one else have that same problem?

No probs with w7, but when lots of people are playing it tends to lag a bit.

Have you done a packet loss test?

as of late i have been having weird issues with missing textures on win7......like objectives not being there etc.
i always found qw to be rather laggy as opposed to other recent games, but nothing too extreme.
not sure how to run a packet loss test either, sounds interesting tho

http://www.pingtest.net/

this site tests for packet loss and speed

packet loss is when packets sent between server and your computer are lost

which can result it horrible play

i thought you meant a test in-game.
was always nice with q3 and et etc, to be able to adjust snaps and rate and the like

Hey sissy,

I did that and packet loss was 0% and ping was around 70ms when I choose Detroit, TX server. But my ping is still hella flaky going from 100 to 300 in a fight, i cant hit anyone. Any ideas? This was all good before I installed windows 7. QW worked like clockword on windows XP. :(

I used the tools at www.broadbandreports.com for testing p/l. I'm not sure if the rwin size in win7 is any different that XP or Vista, but the tests located there can tell you.

cipher, this may be a silly question, but how much ram are you running under win7?
it is a resource hog, perhaps one too many jobs running at the same time.
i run 8 gigs and can burn a dvd and play qw and get no "performance" lag.
(win7 64 pro)
and yeah, q2 hook mod was awsome

Not sure If you have figured this out by now, although I'm going to reply anyways for future reference If anyone comes across this, It might help.

I've noticed that certain games run better in certain compatibility modes on 7.
You can switch to run the game in XP settings through right clicking the game and going to properties.
